Camry 2012

2012 Toyota Camry XLE
Toyota's best-selling Camry receives a host of evolutionary changes for the 2012 model year.
(Credit: Toyota)
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." That must have been Toyota's mantra when approaching the redesigned 2012 Camry, because the broad strokes haven't changed much for this generation. However, for prospective Camry owners, that's a good thing. The Camry's strong points--comfort, safety, and reliability--appear to have been left intact. But the areas in which the previous generation of the Camry could use a bit of improvement--cabin technology, fuel economy, and that awful interior design--have been massaged and tweaked.
We took a ride in the 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE to get an idea of just how much these small changes matter.
Hybrid Synergy Drive
For 2012, the Camry's Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) gets more powerful at both ends. The electric motor now outputs 105kW (up from 30kW) and the gasoline engine gets a bump to 2.5 liters of displacement, now outputting 156 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque (up from 147 ponies and 138 pound-feet). Total system output for the HSD is 200 horsepower, 13 more ponies than the previous model year.

You'd be hard-pressed to notice the increased power from behind the wheel. This is a Camry Hybrid after all. Though the vehicle feels capable, the object of the game is not to knock your socks off with its acceleration. The hybrid didn't struggle as we pushed the heavy sedan up the Hollywood Hills toward the Griffith Observatory. However, the continuously variable transmission added a rubbery feel to the Hybrid's acceleration, padding in a moment or two of hesitation between the gas pedal being mashed and a change in speed.
Where you may notice a change is at the pump. The Camry Hybrid's EPA fuel economy estimates are up to 41 mpg city and 38 highway for our XLE tester. The lighter LE, with its narrower tires, does even better with estimates of 43 city and 39 highway mpg. Of course, we weren't able to test this claim during our short ride.
Handling isn't what we'd call amazing either, with road manners that tend toward safe and predictable understeer. The power steering is still too overboosted for feeling what's happening beneath the tires, but that same light steering makes the Camry easy to pilot within its well-defined handling limits--and, let's be honest, most Camry drivers won't be getting anywhere near those limits.
Tuning in to Entune
Taking center stage in the dashboard is Toyota's new Entune infotainment option, which brings popular smartphone apps into the dashboard through your handset's data connection. Entune differs from systems like Pioneer's AppRadio and Ford's Sync AppLink in that it doesn't require the user to install third-party applications on the connected smartphone. Users will need to install an Entune app on their handset--we were provided with a Motorola Droid X--but this app only enables the car to communicate with the Internet via the phone's Bluetooth connection. The third-party apps themselves are installed on the Entune receiver.

The Entune system connects to the Internet through your smartphone via an Entune app.
(Credit: Antuan Goodwin/CNET)
Available apps include OpenTable, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, and Bing search. However, our preproduction tester only had Pandora Internet Radio installed. From the Pandora app, we were able access the standard suite of controls: browsing stations, creating new stations, and rating songs with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. There's even a two-level option for selecting the quality of the audio stream to balance sound quality with download speed. Album artwork is displayed on the color touch screen, as is song metadata.
The interface, as we were able to experience it, was simple enough that we were able to easily navigate from Pandora to Bing search to, well, navigation, without taking our eyes off of the road for too long. Other core Entune functions include sports, stocks, traffic, weather, and fuel prices.
There are actually three cabin technology packages available that include Entune. The first is the Display Audio with Navigation and Entune package, which is what we were able to test. This is built around a 6.1-inch display and features basic navigation, Bluetooth calling, audio streaming, HD Radio, USB/iPod connectivity, and six speakers. This same package is available with a 10-speaker JBL audio system with a subwoofer. The third package builds on this feature set with a premium HDD-based navigation system with a larger 7-inch screen.
XLE trim-level cabin comfort
From the driver's seat, we noted that the Camry's interior design has improved tremendously since the last generation. Gone is the goofy transparent green plastic; it's been replaced with a tasteful charcoal-colored plastic. The dashboard features a good mix of materials and textures that are pleasing to both the eye and to the touch. For example, the upper dash is covered with a soft-touch leather with attractive stitching. The XLE's steering wheel is wrapped in leather standard, but our vehicle wasn't equipped with the optional leather seating surfaces.

The Camry's dashboard has been simplified with a new clean look and larger buttons.
(Credit: Antuan Goodwin/CNET)
When equipped with the optional power moon roof, the Camry seemed to be lacking in headroom. Our co-driver, a gentleman of average height, noted that his head touched the ceiling while seated in the front passenger seat. The driver can get a bit more headroom thanks to the eight-way powered driver's seat's height adjustment.
Toyota has done a good job of isolating the driver from road and wind noise. However, engine noise was another story. Perhaps it was the stark contrast with the silence of the hybrid system when stopped or operating under electric power, but when the gasoline engine kicked over, we noticed it audibly. And during hard acceleration, the engine noise is downright obnoxious. Perhaps this is Toyota's way of discouraging lead-footed drivers. Treat the go pedal like an eggshell and you'll be rewarded with a smooth, near-silent ride. It's no Lexus LS, but it's still quite good.
The Camry evolved
As is the trend these days, the all-new 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid doesn't take the marquee through any revolutionary changes. As it is, it's an evolution over the previous generation. The changes that we were able to note during our short test were welcome additions to the Camry's bag of tricks. It's slightly stronger, a bit more efficient, and just a bit better-looking.
Entune, in particular, is a welcome addition to Toyota's cabin tech suite. We like that the system enables you to add connected services to your car with the data connection that already exists on your smartphone.
The 2012 Toyota Camry starts at $21,995 for the base-model Camry L, but our Camry Hybrid XLE tops the model range at $27,400. Toyota tells us that this still represents an $800 decrease compared with a similarly equipped 2011 model. The 2012 Toyota Camry will hit dealerships starting in October. Read More

2012 Toyota Camry Appears in Different Form in Ukraine [High-Res Gallery]

After this week's world premiere of the North American market 2012 Camry, Toyota is now preparing the debuts of its mid-size sedan in other regions of the world. First up is the Ukrainian version, which will most likely be offered in the same form in other surrounding markets including Russia.
While both iterations of the 2012 Toyota Camry share the same body and platform, the Ukrainian model sports a different and more prominent front-end design with bespoke headlamp units, bumper, hood, grille and front fenders.

Frankfurt Show Preview: Peugeot’s HX1 Hybrid4 MPV Concept for Six

With the Frankfurt Motor Show just around the corner, Peugeot decided to release the first official photos of the HX1, a six-seater MPV concept propelled by a diesel-electric powertrain.
On the outside, the aerodynamically optimized HX1 (Cd 0.28) adopts the company’s new “floating” front grille that we've already seen on the 508.
One of the concepts unique features are the seven-spoke alloy wheels that resemble turbine blades when stationary, while when on the move, they open up to form a flat surface for better aerodynamic performance. For the same purpose, a spoiler and two side skirts fitted at the top of the tailgate deploy above 100 km/h (62 mph).

Audi Publishes New Pictures of Urban Sportback and Spyder Concepts

After teasing us with a couple of videos and a few sketches, Audi has now unleashed a wave of computer generated images of its two-seat Urban Sportback and Spyder concept models, both of which will receive their world premiere at the upcoming 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany.

RSC Predator GT: German Startup Allegedly Aspires to Build the World's Greatest Hypercar with…2,800HP

There's no shortage of small startups promising to build exotic supercars these days. Just a couple of months ago we showed you Poland's first venture into a segment dominated by names like Lamborghini and Porsche (before you viciously attack our comment area, we're not saying it will actually compete with Lambo…), the Arrinera.
Now, Carscoop reader Juha pointed us to a German startup, which to be frank, we have never heard before. The company is called Rotary Supercars Germany and on its website, it says it plans to create "a symbiosis of the ultimate hypercar and active environmental care".

2012 Ford Taurus Interceptor Stealth Concept

We first laid eyes on the Taurus-based 2012 Ford Police Interceptor back in March, but the automaker is apparently playing with ways the car could potentially fly under the radar. The new Police Interceptor Stealth concept, unveiled at the 2010 Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas, mixes the appearance of a sport sedan with the specialized equipment of a police cruiser.
According to Ford designer Melvin Betancourt, the SEMA show car draws the majority of its inspiration from the legendary Lockheed Martin SR-71 Blackbird. Although we doubt the Taurus-based cop car was fitted with ramjet engines and is capable of reaching supersonic speeds at the fringes of our atmosphere, the Interceptor Stealth concept does sport a similar look: black paint, black wheels, black grille inserts, and deep-tinted window glass all around.
2012 Ford Taurus Police Interceptor Stealth Concept Side View
Sounds neat, but seeing as the Stealth was destined for SEMA, Betancourt's team decided to add a little pizzazz. The Interceptor's suspension was lowered by one inch, while stock Taurus taillight assemblies have been smoked to blend in with the paint job. The stock 18-inch steel wheels have been replaced with giant 22-inch rims, which feature staggered rim sections and chrome accents, not entirely unlike wheels offered on the outgoing Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.
"The center of the wheel is glossy black, and the rim is chrome," Betancourt said. "So we have that racy, hot rod look, but at the same time we're building a sinister, stealthy, 'Don't mess with me' feeling."
2012 Ford Taurus Police Interceptor Stealth Concept Side View
The stealth theme continues within the Interceptor itself. Along with the black seating, headliner, and pillar trim, Police-spec radios and computers -- equipment Ford worked so hard to integrate into its new Interceptor -- have been hidden within a modified Taurus center console. Additionally, the Stealth concept also receives a locking gun compartment within the glove box.
Although we enjoy the notion of a slammed, bad-to-the-bone Taurus SHO, we'd be a little intimidated to see an Interceptor Stealth popping up in our rearview mirror. Ford hasn't officially announced any undercover versions of the production Police Interceptor, but it wouldn't take much -- a Taurus grille and a SHO emblem, perhaps? -- to make the ultimate unmarked patrol car.

2011 Hyunda Sonata Turbo Sema Render Rear Three Quarters
Joining Hyundai's ARK Performance Genesis Coupe time attack car at this year's SEMA Show will be a pearl white 2011 Sonata Turbo built with luxury and style in mind. Unfortunately, this is the only teaser image we received from Hyundai.
Fabricators say that Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, and Porsche sports cars inspired their design direction. Its aggressive exterior lines, for example, take much from the Brabus CLS Rocket. The car rides on 20-inch one-piece wheels as well, much like the Rocket.
Inside, "strategically placed stitched leather" like that of the Ferrari F430 wraps nearly every interior surface. Carbon fiber accents add more sportiness to the Korean car's repertoire.
Under the hood, engineers added an upgraded turbo, exhaust, and intake systems. No word on power output, but it should be considerably more than the stock 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo's 274 horsepower.

2011 RMR Hyundai Equus
In his down time from racing in the Formula D championship and piloting wild cars up Pikes Peak, Rhys Millen runs a performance shop in Huntington Beach, California. While generally focusing its efforts on sports-derived vehicles, RMR recently began crafting a custom Equus for the annual Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas.
2010 marks the third straight year RMR and Hyundai are working together to bring a customized vehicle to the SEMA show. In 2008 RMR built a Genesis coupe and worked its magic inside and out. Stepping up its game, in 2009 RMR started with a similar Genesis coupe, but stripped its engine and installed the same Tau 4.6-liter V-8 as found in the Genesis sedan and upcoming Equus sedan. With go-fast parts, the V-8 produced somewhere near 500 horsepower. Generally using SEMA to launch its latest and greatest, Hyundai gave RMR a 2011 Equus to customize for the show.
Millen's work on the Equus is subtle and tasteful. RMR's line of high-end carbon fiber Signature Edition parts include the front chin spoiler, rear deck lid spoiler, and side mirrors. A two-tone paint scheme has the top half of the car sprayed to look like carbon fiber, while the bottom is Red Bull blue. A set of gunmetal multi-spoke 21-inch HRE wheels finish off the exterior's mild appearance upgrades.
2011 Hyundai Equus Front Three Quarter
From the factory the Equus comes equipped with plenty of standard niceties. RMR replaced the leather seating surfaces on the front seats with ostrich hides with suede inserts. The only other remaining interior differences from a stock Equus are the embroidered headrests and floor mats.
In stock form, the 4.6-liter V-8 produces 385 horsepower, but being a performance shop, RMR had to tinker with the engine just a little. The addition of a new air intake and stainless exhaust tack on another 30 horsepower, bringing the Equus' output to 415 horsepower. A set of 14-inch brakes bring the 4500-pound beast to a halt.
Hyundai's 2011 RMR Equus is scheduled to roll onto the SEMA show floor next month in Las Vegas.

Each November, automakers and tuners show the world the wild vehicles they've been working on at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas. This year, Hyundai has teamed up with Korean tuner ARK to create a supercharged version of its already-potent Genesis Coupe 3.8.
Hyundai teamed up with ARK Performance to create performance parts for the Genesis Coupe. To show off its latest equipment, ARK is preparing the Time Attack Genesis Coupe, which features most of ARK's latest equipment along with several other upgrades making it a true contender for the aftermarket dollar.
Starting with Hyundai's latest Genesis Coupe 3.8 R-Spec, ARK outfitted the show car from the ground up. ARK bolted on its supercharger kit with plans to tune the V-6 closer to 450 horsepower from a stock figure of 306 -- a modest goal based on the equipment at hand. Engine internals were strengthened by replacing connecting rods, swapping piston rings, and replacing all four camshafts. An AEM engine management system handles the advanced engine tuning needed with such a complex setup, while cooling duties are handled by an improved intercooler, oil cooler, and radiator. A Clutchmaster Stage 4 kit was installed to ensure the extra power makes it to the rear wheels through the six-speed manual transmission.
The coupe now sits on a set of six-spoke Volk TE37 wheels, wrapped in Toyo rubber. Sitting behind the new rollers are a set of drilled rotors, gripped by a set of six-piston calipers up front. To get the car ready for track duty, almost every suspension part has been removed and replaced by a performance-oriented equivalent. A new coilover suspension is fitted to all four corners, while rigidity is handled by a new front strut brace and a pair of beefier anti-sway bars.
A complete six-point roll cage was fitted to the interior, along with new gauges, seats, harnesses, and steering wheel. Outside, nearly no body panel goes untouched; front and rear bumpers, side skirts, hood, fenders, and rear spoiler all were added or replaced. Details on the interior trim beyond what's evident from the sketch provided will likely be revealed when the model is unveiled at the show.
ARK and Hyundai are putting the final touches to the project that will debut in early November in Las Vegas. Come back for coverage of the official unveiling on November 2.

2011 Subaru Impreza WRX and WRX STI
Celebrating a year of broken records, Subaru is bringing the "Fastest STI Ever" and Travis Pastrana's New Year's Eve jump car to the SEMA show next week alongside a quartet of tuned-up rides.
"SEMA is the pinnacle of the aftermarket tuning world and the perfect place to show our new line of SPT parts," said Charlie Fishman, national accessory manager for Subaru of America. "With the launch of the new 2011 Impreza WRX and WRX STI, Subaru is having a record year for Subaru Genuine Parts and SPT accessory sales. The launch of the 4-door WRX STI has rekindled interest for the 2011 SEMA Show."
To that end, Subaru will be displaying four tricked-out cars at SEMA including the "Get More G's" WRX STI built by Subaru Performance Tuning itself. Joining it will be custom STIs from Kicker Audio and K&N Performance, as well as the Subiefest "Best of Show" Winner, a 2006 STI owned by Jamarri Whiteside. Cool as these rides may be, a pair of big guns will likely steal the show.
Travis Pastrana In His Record Jump Subaru Wrx Sti
In case you haven't heard, Tommi Makinen managed to get a prepped Subaru WRX STI around the Nurburgring in just 7 minutes and 55 seconds. That car, now dubbed the "Fastest STI Ever," will be one half of Subaru's record-setting duo present at SEMA this year. The other half will be the WRX STI driven by Travis Pastrana when he made a record-setting jump over the Long Beach Harbor on New Year's Eve 2009.
he cars won't be the only stars in attendance, either. Pastrana and SRT USA teammate Dave Mirra will be signing autographs at the Subaru booth from 1 pm to 2 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday and while not a part of the autograph signing, Makinen will be out canvassing the show floor as well.
